Luck? What exactly is it?

In the 1934 film Manhattan Melodrama, Clark Gable’s character, Blackie Gallagher, reflects on his success by saying:

“I’m just a lucky slob from Ohio who happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Well, that’s not true. At least NOT in my 32 years of experience. You can’t be just at right place at right moment if you haven’t moved away from your bed! Then, the bigger question is? What’s luck then? You just get a job because you are lucky? Or made $50,000 off NVIDIA stock?

Sure, luck seems like pure randomness — like finding a parking spot right in front of the store or dropping your toast and it not landing butter-side down.

But science says luck isn’t just about chance. Turns out, it’s also about how we think, act, and occasionally blame Mercury in retrograde 🔮.
